Vinyl Decal Installation & Care

Measure twice. Line it up. Take your time. This guide covers a dry application of single-color cut vinyl on a clean, smooth surface.

Before you start

Check the design, size, and color before removing the backing. Choose a sheltered place at room temperature, out of direct sun. You will need masking tape, a squeegee, and a clean, lint-free cloth. Large or detailed decals are easier with a second person.

1. Clean and dry

Remove dirt, wax, grease, and cleaner residue. Use a surface-compatible cleaner; test an inconspicuous spot first. Let the surface dry fully.

2. Check the position

With the backing still on, hold the decal in place. Measure from fixed reference points and use masking tape to mark its position.

3. Lift the backing

Rub the transfer tape firmly. Peel the backing away slowly, keeping the design on the transfer tape. If a piece stays on the backing, lay it down and rub that area again.

4. Apply gradually

Use a masking-tape hinge to hold alignment. Work in small sections with the squeegee, pressing from the center outward. Do not stretch the decal or force it into deep recesses.

5. Remove the transfer tape

Press the design down firmly. Peel the transfer tape slowly back over itself, close to the surface. If vinyl lifts, stop, lay the tape back down, and press again.

6. Let it settle

Keep the newly applied graphic in stable conditions for at least 24 hours. Avoid scrubbing the edges or directing a pressure-washer jet at them.

Pinstripe strips

Keep the strip straight without stretching it. Match the half-patterns at adjacent ends and butt them together to continue the design. Check alignment before pressing down.
